![]() July 2003 Diabetes ProgramsPresented by the Diabetes Education department at Athens Regional Medical Center. Diabetes Education Diabetes is a complicated disease to manage. Athens Regional Medical Center's Diabetes Education Services uses a team approach to help people with diabetes learn to manage their diabetes. Diabetes Education Services has been awarded recognition by the American Diabetes Association in accordance with the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education programs. Located in the Medical Services Building, office hours are from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Appointments are required. Diabetes Consultation Individual consultation with a Diabetes Educator for problem-solving and support offered by appointment. Call 475-5600 for more information and to schedule an appointment. Diabetes Outpatient Program This comprehensive educational program includes individual consultation plus complete self-management skills training classes. Foot and eye screenings are available to participants. Included in the outpatient program is an eight-week introductory exercise class. Participants will be required to check their own blood sugar before and after each exercise session. These sessions are offered Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 9-10 a.m. and Mondays and Thursdays from 5-6 p.m. A physician’s order and pre-registration is required. Call 475-5600 for more information and to register. ABC's of Diabetes Single topic lectures that cover various aspects of diabetes self-management and healthy living. You don’t have to have diabetes to attend. Pre-registration is required. The cost is $5 per person. All programs begin at 5:30 pm and are held in the Diabetes Education Services Classroom in the Medical Services Building. Topics for the month of July are: July 22: Emotional Eating and Stress July 29: Avoiding Diabetes Complications Diabetes Support Group A support group for people with diabetes and their caregivers. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 7th with the topic: A Step In The Right Direction presented by Pam Yeargin, RN, BSN, CDE. The meeting will begin at 6:30 pm in the Diabetes Education Services Classroom in the Medical Services Building. Call Diabetes Education Services at 475-5600 for more information. Healthy Habits . . . for a Lifetime A program designed for people diagnosed with pre-diabetes or for those who are at risk for developing diabetes. The focus is on developing healthy eating and exercise habits to promote weight loss and weight management for a lifetime of good health. A physician’s order is required. Playing for a Cure Concert and Auction Friday, July 18 @ 7 pm Oconee County Civic Center Annual benefit for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Concert featuring local music legends, as well as a live and silent auction with items such as the "Athens Guitar II"- signed by members of bands formed during 1983-1993; variety of art works, Hiawassee weekend get-away; 2 AirTran tickets; and much more! $10.00 per person/$5.00 per child (12 and under).
