The Facts About Breast Cancer
- In the year 2000, more than 235,000 women nationwide were diagnosed with breast cancer.
- A woman’s risk of developing breast cancer increases with age, growing to a 1 in 8 risk over her lifetime.
- Breast cancer is the number one cancer diagnosis in women at ARMC with 126 new cases identified in the year 2000.
- Specific groups in our population are not currently receiving mammograms.
- Early detection improves the outcomes of breast cancer.
About the ARMC Breast Center
- Screening and diagnostic mammography and breast ultrasound offered in a private, personalized, efficient and effective approach.
- A dedicated staff:
- breast health nurse
- mammography technicians
- Will work closely with multi-disciplinary team of physicians.
- Will augment existing services
- Tumor board
- Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support
- Professional Advisory Board and Community Advisory Committee will become integral parts of the program.
- Will help reduce the psychological morbidity of patients and their families.
Technology Components
R2 ImageChecker
- CAD enabled system assists radiologists in the early detection of breast cancer.
- For every 1,000 cancers currently detected by screening mammography, the ImageChecker could result in early detection of an additional 205 breast cancers.
- Purchased immediately by the Foundation.

Many women are not receiving regular mammograms because of time limitations, cultural barriers, or inability to pay. |
The ARMC Breast Center will offer a multidisciplinary approach to Breast Health.
ARMC Breast Center and the Athens Regional Foundation are pleased to announce a $3.5 million campaign to create the ARMC Breast Center and express their appreciation to G.I.F.T. (Employees of ARHS) and the ARMC Auxiliary for their support.
