Mammography

Breast Screening is one of the most important methods to safegaurd your good health. Athens Regional Medical Center's Physician Imaging center is ready to help.

A mammogram is an x-ray that uses low doses of radiation to produce an image of the inside of the breast. Mammography is a proven way to find most "silent" breast cancers in women without symptoms.

A radiologist will interpret your mammogram. Occasionally, you may be called back for supplimentary views and more complete evaluation by the radiologist. This is not unusual.

Recommendations for your mammogram:

  • Please allow 30 minutes for your mammogram.
  • Do not wear body powder or deodorant.
  • Please wear two-piece clothing, as it will be more convenient.
  • A caffeine-free diet for several days before your mammogram will reduce breast tenderness.
  • Please be on time for your appointment.
  • Keep in mind your menstral cycle when scheduling your appointment. The breats are less sesitive to the compression a week to ten days post-menses.

    Bone Density Testing

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) testing determines the density of your bones. BMD tests use small amounts of radiation to determine the bone density of the spine, hip, or wrist. Your results are compared with the average BMD of healthy women at their peak bone mass. This information can help your doctor diagnose osteoporosis or determine whether you need to take certain steps to protect your bone health.

BMD tests are more sensitive than ordinary X-rays and can diagnose bone loss at an earlier stage. Normal X-rays can detect fractures of the bone, but are not sensitive enought to detect bone loss unitl at least 30% of the bone mass has been lost.

BMD testing is easy and safe. A BMD test is simple, nonivasive, and painless- you don't even need to undress is most cases. You will be exposed to very little radiation- in fact, in most cases, less than a standard chest X-ray. As with any procedure, inform your physician is you are pregnant. Tests of the spine, arm or hip can take two to five minutes each. You should wear comfortable clothing, preferably without metal buttons, buckles or zippers.
