There are a variety of causes of voice problems, but one of the most common seen by a Speech/Language Pathologist is vocal hoarseness. Hoarseness can be caused by many different factors. The most frequent cause of hoarseness is the common cold with laryngitis. However, many other conditions may be the culprit including upper respiratory infections, allergies, reflux, chronic vocal abuse or misuse and growths on the vocal folds such as nodules. Following the diagnosis by an otolaryngologist/ear, nose and throat doctor (ENT), voice therapy by a Speech/Language Pathologist may be recommended. In addition, the physician may recommend an examination with a laryngeal videostroboscope. This will allow for pictures to be taken of your vocal cords to assist with diagnosis and treatment. Many voice problems improve dramatically with the help of a Speech Pathologist. If voice therapy is recommended, an evaluation by a Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP) to determine the most likely cause(s) of your voice problem. The assessment will include analysis of vocal pitch using an instrument called a Visi-Pitch, measures of respiratory efficiency for production of speech sounds, and an in-depth questionnaire of your medical history and vocal use. Following the evaluation, the SLP will make recommendations and instruct the patient in voice exercises.
