Examining digital mammogramsRegular breast screening is one of the most important methods to safeguard your good health. At the Athens Regional Breast Health Center, we are ready to help you with your mammogram. We are the only All Digital Mammography Facility in North East Georgia.

A mammogram is an x-ray that uses low dose radiation to produce an image of the inside of the breast. Mammography is a proven way to find most "silent" breast cancers in women without symptoms.

The Facts About Breast Cancer

  • In the year 2000, more than 235,000 women nationwide were diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • A woman's risk of developing breast cancer increases with age, growing to a 1 in 8 risk over her lifetime.
  • Specific groups in our population are not currently receiving mammograms.
  • Early detection improves the outcomes of breast cancer.

Reading your Mammogram
A radiologist will interpret your mammogram using traditional methods plus the R2 Image Checker. The Image Checker uses digital technology to locate structural abnormalities within the breast. For every 1,000 cancers currently detected by screening mammography, the Image Checker could result in early detection of an additional 205 breast cancers.

Occasionally, you may be called back for additional views and further evaluation by the radiologist. This is not unusual.

Recommendations for your mammogram:

  • Please allow 30 minutes for your mammogram
  • Do not wear body powder or deodorant.
  • Please wear two-piece clothing, as it will be more convenient.
  • A caffeine-free diet for several days before your mammogram will reduce breast tenderness.
  • Please be on time for your appointment.
  • Keep your menstrual cycle in mind when scheduling your appointment. The breasts are less sensitive to the compression a week to ten days post-menses.

    Scheduling your Mammogram

Mammograms are done Monday through Friday from 7 am until 5 pm.

You can schedule your yearly mammogram yourself or through your doctor’s office. Please keep in mind that you must have at least one year between your screening mammograms.

If you are having a medical problem and need a mammogram, these can be scheduled at any time.

You need to have a doctor’s order at the time of your exam.

For questions or to schedule an appointment, please call (706) 475-4960.
