Upper
GI
Why do I need this?
The Upper GI studies many abnormalities that may occur
in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Many patients will have an upper
GI for symptoms including nausea, vomiting, reflux, dyspepsia, or other
digestive symptoms.
What is it like for the patient?
All patients are asked to fast after midnight (NPO) the night before
the exam. Once in the exam room you will be given 4 ounces of barium
to drink, which is about the consistency of a melted milkshake. During
the upper GI, the radiologist watches the barium go from the esophagus
and into the stomach on an x-ray monitor. This procedure lasts for about
30 minutes and there is no discomfort or any aftereffects for patients
having this procedure.
