Bone Density Testing

Why Do I Need This?

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) testing determines the density of your bones. BMD tests use small amounts of radiation to determine the bone density of the spine, hip, or wrist. Your results are compared with the average BMD of healthy women at their peak bone mass. This information can help your doctor diagnose osteoporosis or determine whether you need to take certain steps to protect your bone health.

BMD tests are more sensitive than ordinary X-rays and can diagnose bone loss at an earlier stage. Normal X-rays can detect fractures of the bone, but are not sensitive enough to detect bone loss until at least 30% of the bone mass has been lost.

What is this like for the patient?
BMD testing is easy and safe. A BMD test is simple, noninvasive, and painless- you don't even need to undress is most cases. You will be exposed to very little radiation- in fact, in most cases, less than a standard chest X-ray. As with any procedure, inform your physician is you are pregnant. Tests of the spine, arm or hip can take two to five minutes each while you lie on the exam table. You should wear comfortable clothing, preferably without metal buttons, buckles or zippers.

If you have any questions or you need to schedule an appointment please call (706) 475-9729.
