Maternal Child- Midwifery Services

For over 20 years, Athens Regional Medical Center (ARMC) has provided our community with excellent obstetrical care through its Nurse-Midwifery Services. The ARMC program, founded in 1977, is recognized as a model program for the entire state of Georgia.

What is a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM)?

A CNM is a registered nurse who has received advanced education in both nursing and midwifery. At ARMC, all Nurse-Midwives are certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives for their breadth of education and specialized skills.

Studies show that the personalized care given by CNMs is both safe and satisfying. The close attention and skilled care have a proven connection to a low rate of episiotomies, cesarean sections, premature babies and low-birth weight babies.

Spectrum of Care

The midwives at ARMC provide a broad spectrum of care for women, throughout pregnancy and beyond. We offer:
  • prenatal care
  • labor and birth assistance
  • postpartum care
  • well-woman GYN care (annual exams, pap smears, etc.)
  • family planning
  • preconception care
  • counseling and education in health maintenance and disease prevention
As an integral part of these services, we take into account the physical, social and spiritual needs of each woman and her family.

Where Can You Find Us?

The ARMC Nurse-Midwifery Service, comprised of 7 CNMs and 8 support staff, provides care from offices on the ARMC campus. We also work closely with the Clarke County Health Department, Northeast Georgia Health District, a social worker, nursing staffs of ARMC and medical consultants.

Births are attended in the in-hospital Birthing Center at ARMC. CNMs perform normal deliveries independently with physicians available for consultation or referral should complications arise.

Most private insurance, Medicare, Medicaid and managed-care programs cover Nurse-Midwifery services.

Our Promise to You

As nurse-midwives, we provide quality care to women in a nurturing environment, while involving them and their family in the care and decision making.
