*HEALING WITH BODY ENERGY WORK*
Healing
Touch
by Veronica (Ronnie) Sutherlan RN, CHTP
What is Healing Touch?
Healing Touch is a therapy used to promote health and well being
by using techniques that influence the energy system of the body
through touch. It is built on the philosophy of caring for the
whole person…body, mind and spirit. The purpose of Healing
Touch is to restore harmony and balance to the energy system in
order to maximize a person’s healing potential and enhance
a sense of well being. Healing Touch is not intended to cure patients,
nor is it meant to replace traditional medicine and therapies.
It complements traditional therapeutic approaches of physicians
and other health care providers. Healing Touch may help promote
relaxation, relieve stress, relieve or reduce pain, and increase
vitality and energy. Healing touch has its roots in the nursing
profession. The curriculum is designed as a multi-level educational
program. The practitioner has to meet all program requirements
followed by a one-year mentorship with a certified Healing Touch
practitioner, and requires documentation of 100 Healing touch
sessions before applying to the Healing Touch International Board
for certification.
What is a Healing Touch Treatment Like?
You will be asked to lie on a massage table, fully clothed, in
a quiet room. Relaxation occurs best when there are as few distractions
as possible. During the treatment you may experience gentle touch
or notice my hands moving above your body through your energy
field. If you have fallen asleep by the end of your session, you
will be allowed to rest quietly for a while then gently awakened.
Many people report that healing touch has a powerful and positive
effect on their well being. Most people say that they are completely
relaxed after the session.
About Me
I was introduced to healing touch in 1996 when my husband was
diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. Healing Touch was the only
thing that relieved his pain and nausea. He would sleep peacefully
for hours after a session. After his death I became a Certified
Healing Touch Practitioner to give back to others the peace and
comfort that he received during his illness. In January 2001,
I left hospital nursing and opened my private practice in Healing
Touch on the island of Kauai. I provided Healing Touch to the
employees of Malama Pono and First Hawaiian Bank for stress management.
Georgia is my new home. I have been a Healing Touch provider at
the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support since June. I look forward
to sharing my professional experience with the clients of the
Mind Body Institute.

Reiki
Bobby Tyler, Reiki Master, has been a Reiki
practitioner since 1995 and has been working at the Loran Smith
Center for Cancer Support since 2001. He is also an ordained minister
and has served as a speaker and group facilitator for different
spiritual organizations around the country.
WHAT IS REIKI?
Reiki (pronounced “ray-kee”) is a 3,000 year old healing
art that traces its origins to Tibet and Japan. The word Reiki
is Japanese for “Universal life force energy.” It
is a form of healing touch used for stress reduction and relaxation,
thereby improving health and enhancing the quality of life. The
Reiki practitioner serves as a facilitator, helping the recipient
open up to the natural healing energy that flows within every
living being.
WHAT IS A REIKI SESSION LIKE?
During a Reiki session, the recipient simply lies on
a massage table, remaining fully clothed, and relaxes as the Reiki
Master directs healing energy throughout the body. Many clients
report feeling a profound sense of peace or relaxation following
a Reiki treatment.
