Maternal Child- The Birthing Center

Childbirth is a new beginning in a family and families are our specialty. We are proud to have one of the most progressive centers in Northeast Georgia, where we provide a wide range of obstetrical care. We were one of the first Family Care Units in the state and we continue to set the standard for care for mother and baby. ARMC now offers online preregistration for Labor and Delivery patients.

The Facility

We have ten comfortable Birthing Suites, three observation beds, and two Cesarean Birth rooms in our Labor and Delivery Unit. After you deliver, you will move to a private room on the Family Care Unit. For critically-ill babies, we also have a 10-bed Special Care Nursery designed and equipped with everything from state-of-the-art medical equipment to mobiles and music for stimulating your baby’s growth and development.

Our Promise to You

When you deliver at ARMC, you can:
  • Have the ones you love the most with you during your labor and delivery
  • Deliver in one of our ten comfortable birthing suites
  • Make your own choices in managing the discomforts of childbirth, whether it’s the use of a "birthing" ball, soaking in a tub or receiving epidural anesthesia
  • Have time to get acquainted with your newest family member immediately after delivery
  • Rely on a team of specially-trained staff ready to attend any high-risk deliveries
  • Expect, after delivery, to have one nurse responsible for caring for both mom and baby in your private room, making sure your questions are answered and your needs are met
  • View, in the privacy of your room, audio-visual aids on many aspects of caring for baby and mom
  • Take home a customized video on baby care
  • Read educational materials at your leisure in the hospital or take them home
  • Share this special time with your loved ones when they visit in your room
  • Consult a breastfeeding specialist on staff to help you while in the hospital or after you go home
  • Discover important opportunities for sustaining the special bond between parent and child, such as rocking the infant

Special Care Nursery Services

Last year, our team of highly qualified physicians, nurse midwives and nurses provided care for over 1600 beautiful babies and their families. Our goal is that every pregnancy ends in the best possible outcome, but we’re ready when the best doesn’t happen. The Special Care Nursery at Athens Regional Medical Center is ready to provide intensive care to any critically ill newborn.

Special Care for the Entire Family

Our 10-bed unit is equipped with everything from state-of-the-art medical equipment to mobiles and music for stimulating your baby’s growth and development. We also offer important opportunities for discovering the special bond between parent and child, such as rocking the infant. We welcome parents and grandparents to visit and encourage phone calls to check on the baby.

A neonatologist (a doctor who specializes in the care of infants) is on call 24-hours a day. An exceptional RN staff provides round-the-clock intensive nursing care to these babies. You can count on these nurses to treat the infant and provide loving, personal care to meet the needs of the entire family.

Preparing for Discharge

Before infants go home from our Special Care Nursery, all parents learn to care for their special infant. We help you with topics such as feeding, bathing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). After an extended stay, parents have the opportunity to "room in" with their infant at the hospital in order to make the transition from the hospital to home smoother.
