2008 J.W. Fanning Humanitarian of the Year Winner

This year's recipient was announced at the 18th annual J. W. Fanning Humanitarian of the Year and Pillar Society Reception held May 6 at The Taylor-Grady House. The Annual Gifts Committee of the Athens Regional Foundation sponsors the reception.

Some of the nomination comments about the winner were:

  • "Her service to the community, commitment, dedication and hard work are making Athens-Clarke County and its surrounding counties better places to live."
  • Her involvement in Athens Regional Medical Center and the Foundation extends over 22 years. Significant accomplishments include being heavily involved with the Breast Health Center, and she is currently raising funds for the Cancer Care Services campaign in her role as chair of a development committee.
  • "She 'walks the talk' and believes in diversity."
  • "I am also aware of the numerous quiet, often anonymous ways in which she serves our area and our citizens."
  • She served as coordinator of the 200th anniversary celebration of the University of Georgia, and managed a statewide undertaking, four years in the planning, with consummate skill and grace.
  • "I have known and admired her for thirty-five years as a colleague and friend. I also knew and admired Mr. Fanning. It seems particularly fitting to nominate her for the Fanning award, since she so strongly exemplifies the humanitarian values of Mr. Fanning."
  • She serves the University of Georgia, the Georgia Museum of Art, Athens Academy, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, OneAthens Community Foundation and, of course, Athens Regional Foundation with enthusiasm, boundless energy and good sense.
  • Above all, she and her husband have served as sterling role models for their daughter. Our nominee champions the effort to provide educational access to all students from diverse backgrounds and promotes Athens Academy's service leaning program, inspiring students to be active in community service.
  • "Modesty, intelligence and education to the betterment of community are all hallmarks of humanitarianism. She possesses each of these virtues in full measure and in the full spirit of J.W. Fanning."

And the winner was ...
